Black Rock Forest Consortium
Green Building and Smart Features
Facilities Master Plan

In 1995, The Black Rock Forest Consortium commissioned Fox & Fowle Architects (now FXFOWLE Architects) to develop a Master Plan for the Forest to identify the appropriate siting for the group's first permanent structures.  After considering sites around the Forest, using 16 criteria (such as size, safe vehicular access, distance from neighbors, location outside watershed areas and designated ecological reserves, ease of utility connections, and esthetics), the Consortium and the architects selected a location on the shoulder of Whitehorse Mountain site because, as the site of an old farm, it was an already disturbed area with easy access to primary roadways and because it had the greatest number of positive features including, in particular, a quiet and beautiful natural forest setting.

Also as a part of the master plan, FXFOWLE and the Consortium developed Sustainable Guidelines for future design and construction that outlined energy use, daylighting and ventilation standards, and materials usage.
