Earth Day 2007

Black Rock Forest held its first Earth Day celebration on April 22, 2007.  More than 100 Friends of the Forest, neighbors, and Consortium visitors attended a series of events.

They helped plant two flowering dogwoods (one given in honor of a wedding and one as a memorial) and a large white pine, given by Forest staff and the Consortium in memory of Pat Yazgi, founder of Friends of Fishes, who was very important in the creation of the Forest's trout program.  (Right photo by Dale Chayes.)

With the help of Forest Operations Manager Jack Caldwell, they released 150 of those brook trout, the first fingerlings of the season, into a Black Rock Brook tributary. One of the goups participating was the Orange County 4H Program (left photo), sponsored by the Orange County Water Authority.

They toured the Science Center and Forest Lodge to learn about the buildings’ award-winning green features, including geothermal heating and cooling, solar panel arrays, waterless composting toilets, and materials from the Forest itself.
