News and Events Spring 2008 Forest Events Would you like to get out into the woods and help Black Rock Forest at the same time this spring? Here are two opportunities.
Black Rock Forest Tree Planting Day Meet at the Black Rock Forest Old Forest Headquarters at 129 Continental Road, Cornwall, between 9 and 10 AM. Many threats face our native forests, including failing regeneration of canopy trees such as red oak (Quercus rubra). Oaks enhance our ecosystem by improving water quality and providing food and shelter for native wildlife. Help us plant advanced-stage, local-source red oak seedlings into a 1-acre opening in the forest that has not yet regenerated naturally. We need help moving seedlings, digging holes, planting trees, watering trees, and completing a deer exclusion fence. Bring work gloves and wear sturdy boots and field clothes, and we will supply all the materials. This activity is great for all ages, but kids -- make sure to bring an adult!
Black Rock Brook and Canterbury Brook Cleanup Meet at the main Forest entrance (across 9W from the Storm King School) between 9 and 10 AM. Groups will traverse the banks of Black Rock Brook and Canterbury Brook to clean up trash and accumulated debris to help keep these streams healthy and attractive. The Town of Cornwall will pick up and dispolse of all trash, recyclables, metal, tires, etc., that we can find. We will supply directions, gloves, and trash bags (although you may certainly bring your own if you have them. |
