Mount Misery
Mount Misery is the closest mountain peak to the Forest entrance and Science Center area. However, its elevation is over 1300 feet and the only trail up is the yellow-blazed Stillman Trail, very steep from either the north or south, giving the peak its appropriate name. Rock outcrops on the summit provide dramatic views to the west of Aleck Meadow Reservoir and Black Rock Mountain. The summit features plants such as pitch pine and scrub oak that are well adapted to the harsh, windswept conditions. Despite the relatively easy access, some of the hemlock and chestnut oak trees on its steep slopes escaped the many episodes of logging in the area; increment cores have confirmed that some are as much as 250 years old. |
