Old Forest Headquarters

The Old Headquarters (Old HQ or Old Forest Headquarters) area is a 4-acre land parcel located on the opposite side of Route 9W from the main portion of the Black Rock Forest. The Old Headquarters building itself is located at 129 Continental Road. This remains the mailing address for the Forest and the Consortium and, as the name implies, this facility formerly housed the offices of the Forest. It is now used as a lodging facility for Consortium visitors (15 beds, 1.5 baths), conveniently situated just 1 mile from the center of the town of Cornwall, and 2 miles and 600 feet of elevation below the Science Center and Forest Lodge. The property also houses the Open Lowland environmental monitoring station, snow station, long-term precipitation collection site, mercury cycling station, experimental garden, tree nursery, sawmill, wood shop, equipment storage facilities, Director’s House, and the Jack Karnig black walnut grove, named after the former Forest Director. The property sits between Black Rock Brook and Canterbury Brook and provides easy access to these streams for sampling and study.
