Split Rock

Split Rock is a long granite gneiss rock outcrop at the high point of the northeast-southwest trending ridge that separates the Canterbury Brook watershed to the west from the Sutherland Pond and Sphagnum Pond areas to the east. The “split” in the rock is a long crack that represents an ancient rock fault. The outcrop provides excellent views over Sutherland Pond and the Eagle Cliff ridge beyond, and on a clear day one can see the skyscrapers of Manhattan. It can be accessed from several trails that pass interesting features such as a high elevation vernal pond and an old rock quarry.
