Beech leaf disease is an introduced and rapidly spreading forest pathogen threatening the existence of American beech trees and the health of temperate broadleaf forests. Although there are currently no viable options for meaningfully controlling beech leaf disease, understanding where it is, where it is spreading to, and how it is impacting forest health and regeneration are critical for managing the ecological harm it can cause. During this presentation, I will discuss findings from our research studying beech tree health and related changes in forest vegetation between NYC and the Catskills and describe new tools we are developing to track beech leaf disease and support practitioners in identifying places to target their management efforts.
